I nod silently, desperate for him to go on, to quiet my fears, explain the madness I see at every turn. The recollection of the day I became an orphan that came so clearly to me tonight has only added to my confusion. I need to know who Gregori really is, if I really can give him my loyalty, my promise to be faithful, and trust him with my life as well as my past.

My emotions are in turmoil, heightened further by my attraction to him. Though I had no knowledge of sex until tonight, having him be the one to take my virginity felt good and right. There was pain, yes, but also indescribable pleasure. I did not know it could be so two-sided. He’s the first man to have touched me in this way, and something in my soul tells me he will be the last man. The only man. Forever.

He rolls to the side and pulls me to rest across his broad muscled chest as we linger in the warmth of the bath we’ve just made love in. His strong arms encircle me, wrapping me in safety and calm, despite the act of violence I’ve just witnessed. I snuggle into the nest of dark hairs that cover his magnificent pectorals.

“My name is Gregori Andreivich Matuschev, head of the Matuschev mafiya family based in Vladivostok. My father was Anatoly Matuschev, who passed away last year.”

“I’m sorry,” I say, knowing the pain of such loss.

He shakes his head. “Don’t be. He was a penny-pinching, sadistic vampire who cared for nothing and no-one besides his power and his money and would stop at nothing to gain either one.”

“He was cruel to you?”

“He was cruel to my mother. I believe she died of neglect and sorrow more than her illness. To me, he was more of a despotic military commander. Dictatorial, fearsome, and fixated on singular goals without regard for the casualties. I’m glad he’s dead.”

“You can’t mean that.”

“Oh, I do. He wielded his wealth and ambition like a weapon. I did as he told me, no matter how despicable the act.” His words are so cold I shiver even in the warmth of his arms. “I couldn’t show any hesitation, any weakness. He would have either flogged me or emasculated me in such a way that flogging would have been preferable.”

“E-mas-cu…what?”

“Made me into a pussy; a powerless, ridiculed minion in his ranks. I would not have inherited this business empire if I had succumbed to any emotion, any remorse or sense of decency; these things he saw as weaknesses and were not to be tolerated.”

“You are not weak; and you did inherit it, and you carry it on. But are you proud of it? You peddle flesh, carry guns and knives, run gambling and I’m afraid to know what else. You do not abide by the law. A man has been shot and it does not even bother you. If life means that little to you, how much can I possibly mean to you?”

Gregori cups my chin firmly and turns my face upward to meet his.
